Mission StatementIt is the purpose of the Marion Fire Department Dive Team/water rescue to save lives by providing and maintaining an emergency rescue team. The rescue team is capable of responding to any swift water rescue or underwater rescue or recovery. We also work closely with the city and county police departments on evidence recovery. The Marion Fire Department water/rescue team will respond to any water emergency throughout the city and also throughout the county. History of Dive/Rescue TeamIn the early 1970's under Mayor Gene Moore and Fire Chief Russ Sheridan, the water/rescue team consisted of a 14-foot fishing boat with firefighters using grapple hooks and pike poles for recoveries, while above water rescues only had the use of ropes. Then in the 1990's, the dive team was re-implemented by Fire Chief Mike Hutchinson under Mayor Robert Mitchell. A lot of those firemen on the water/rescue had purchased a Zodiac 35 HP motorboat, a 16-foot 40 HP John boat, and 9 sets of dive gear to keep on fire trucks for the dive teams use along with all rescue rope and equipment. Our dive team/water rescue consists of an 18-member team. All members are certified thru the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) and the state of Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
